Architecture

More than 70 years ago, the first classes in architecture were offered at the University of Arkansas in response to the post-World War II building boom. Today, the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design enjoys a national reputation for producing outstanding designers who are well prepared for professional practice. We emphasize drawing as a tool for seeing, and many of our students excel in hand rendering, something of a lost art in the age of digital design.

Student Financial Information

Please find the University of Arkansas Cost of Attendance (COA) information on the Financial Aid website. Information regarding additional costs students should expect while enrolled in the Department of Architecture at the Fay Jones School are identified below:

  • Learning in the Fay Jones School Department of Architecture values hands-on, project-driven learning in design studios.  Department of Architecture students are required to purchase and obtain materials and supplies as prescribed in design studio courses.  Students should expect to spend approximately $600 on supplies each year. Some supplies will be reusable from year to year, while others will need to be repurchased based on use.

  • A reliable laptop is essential to student success in design. Students are responsible for purchasing a laptop computer that meets all minimum specifications and requirements. Qualifying laptops range in price. First-year students can expect to spend approximately $300 on necessary design software and plan for an additional $150 in licensing maintenance fees each year after. University of Arkansas students can receive a discount on software, and it is advised to wait to purchase design programs until instructed.

  • The Department of Architecture places value in providing the opportunity to participate in Travel Week. Depending on the year level, travel week occurs annually (first through third years) or on a semester by semester basis (fourth and fifth years). The planned travel is designed to provide exposure to applied design work and built environments of significance that tangibly demonstrate concepts explored in the classroom. Travel Week is elective and costs are not included in tuition. Students electing to travel can expect to spend approximately $750 per semester or $1,500 per year for Travel Week.
